Ottobrunn, Germany

Ottobrunn Germany

Ottobrunn is a municipality located southeast of Munich in Bavaria, Germany, founded in 1955. The town is characterized mainly by semi-detached and detached houses and large garden areas. Ottobrunn hosts the German headquarters of Airbus Defense and Space (formerly the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, EADS), with most of Airbus DS’s facilities located in the neighboring community of Taufkirchen. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Ottobrunn is the second-most densely populated municipality in Germany, behind only Munich and ahead of Berlin. The town center was created in the mid‑1980s, with the town hall completed in 1983 and the community center in 1986. The community center is named after the German-Italian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, who lived in Ottobrunn from 1915 to 1931. Ottobrunn is also home to the Ottosäule, a memorial Doric column created by sculptor Anton Ripfel. It commemorates the day in 1832 when Otto of Greece traveled through the area on his way to become king of Greece. The column was originally placed exactly 12 km from the center of Munich, marking the point on the route where Otto’s father took leave of his son. It was later moved 9 meters southwest to allow for the widening of Rosenheimer Landstrasse.
